AI-Create

An exploration in using AI to create art and the design of an online website to help people use AI to create art.

About the Project

'AIM' - is a web site to create art using AI

For my final year degree project I explored the notion of creativity and how AI can be used to create new types of images and then designed a website to enable people to access Artificial Intelligence systems to create artwork.

The project has two distinct parts:

Part One

Part one of the project is concerned with experimenting and learning how to use and apply Artificial Intelligence using open source AI systems, such as Google Colab's Disco Diffusion Engine, to make art. There are many AI engines available to creatives and I experimented with several of them. They work by using 'prompts' in the form of words, images or other types of media. Some use video, animation and audio. I focused on the use of word prompts, as this aligns with my creative process of using words, mind-maps and news as my starting point. In this project I focused on using Google Colab's open source AI systems to create wonderful and surreal, dream like images! The final pieces and collections can be see here

Part Two

Part two of the project was focused on using and applying user experience design principles to create a web site called 'AIM' that I have designed to enable people (users) to create their own images using Google Colab's 'Latent Fusion' and 'Disco Diffusion'. I designed the interface, visual design layout, site architecture and structure and the visual design system using. As a digital designer I have applied user experience design principles to research with users and design an intuitive to use website.

The website is designed for members to sign-up to the site and join a community where they create art work with various AI systems. The site enables artists to generate unique images.

How it works

The user can join and then has access to a 'Studio' to interact with the AI system. The user enters a concept to prompt the the AI system to generate associated words. The user then selects the words they want to use and these must include words (prompts for the system) that include an 'Entity', an ' Emotions' and 'Colours'. The system then forms a description or short narrative. These can be very poetic. They that are generated by the GTP3 AI system, that then passes the word prompts to another AI system that is able to generate pictures from Text; Google Colab's Disco Diffusion. This is the AI engine that generates the image.

On the website users can create their own profile, generate images, create collections, set-up a gallery and sell their work as physical artefacts or 'mint' them as NFTs to sell. Collectors can purchase NFTs of their favourite artists and create collections. The interface is intuitive to use and removes the coding complexity that is currently involved in AI art generators. I use Google Colab Pro, a paid service that gives access and priority to better graphics processing units (GPUs) and extended runtime to enable more complex images to be created for users of the site.

About Me

I’m a digital designer and artist I am interested in art, activitism, technology and creative design. Currently, I am studying on the final year of the BFA in Art and Design course at Birmingham City University where I have been able to develop my understanding of art, design, and contextual studies.

I am interested in human centred design, social enterprise and innovation, activism in women's rights and gender equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility and creating engaging experiences by applying human centred design and experience design principles.

I work part-time as an intern at Factotum Design, where I support user research activities, user experience design and visual design in a small boutique digial agency.

I also invived in supportng the annual DesignOps Global Conference, where I have worked in helping set-up the conference, creating design for print and web and acting as a concierge onine for their online event.

In 2022/23 I will undertake post-graduate vocational studies for one year where I will focus on furthering my skills in User Experience Design, Service Design and User Interface Design.
